Tin-Can Command Ends Comprehensive In-House Training To Boost Officer Efficiency

The Tin-Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has successfully concluded a week-long in-house training programme designed to strengthen the capacity, professionalism, and operational efficiency of its senior officers.

The intensive training, held from Monday, October 13 to Friday, October 17, 2025, took place within the Command premises and brought together officers from various units and departments.

According to a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, CSC Oscar Ivara, the exercise formed part of ongoing efforts to build a more skilled and adaptive workforce capable of meeting the evolving demands of modern customs operations.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, underscored the importance of continuous learning and professional development, urging officers to take full advantage of such opportunities.

“This training is not just a routine exercise but an investment in the growth of our personnel,” Onyeka stated. “I urge all officers to apply the knowledge gained to their daily duties and continually strive for excellence in service delivery.”

He further revealed that while this edition was targeted at senior officers, plans are already underway to organize a similar capacity-building session for junior officers, ensuring that every cadre benefits from the Command’s commitment to professional development.

The programme featured resource persons drawn from within the Command, reflecting the wealth of expertise available internally. Topics covered included Physical Examination (handled by the Customs Area Controller), Reputation Management, Risk Management and Documentary Checks, Evidence Exploitation, Customs Procedure Codes, and Classification. Others included VIN Valuation, Customs Valuation, Code of Conduct, and Customs Administration, among others.

At the close of the training, Comptroller Onyeka reaffirmed the Command’s dedication to cultivating a knowledgeable, skilled, and proactive workforce equipped to tackle the dynamic challenges of customs operations.

Participants expressed satisfaction with the quality and relevance of the training. Many commended the Command for its commitment to staff development, describing the sessions as practical, impactful, and timely.

Assistant Comptroller Rose Bonat of the Transire Unit praised the initiative as “laudable and forward-thinking,” noting that it exposed her to updated Standard Operating Procedures and best practices that will enhance her performance.

“This training has broadened my understanding and equipped me with tools that are directly applicable to my role. I commend the Command’s leadership for investing in the professional growth of its officers,” she stated.
