Nestlé Nigeria has launched a Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Training Program to empower 100 plastic waste workers in Lagos and Abuja, reinforcing its commitment to environmental sustainability and social inclusion.
The initiative, supported by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), the Recyclers Association of Nigeria (RAN), and the Food Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA), is designed to improve safety, dignity, and productivity among plastic waste collectors—key players in Nigeria’s recycling value chain.

The comprehensive training focused on best practices in occupational health and safety, responsible material handling, fire prevention, and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Each participant also received PPE kits to promote safer working conditions and healthier communities.
Victoria Uwadoka, Nestlé Nigeria’s Corporate Communications, Public Affairs, and Sustainability Lead, described the program as part of Nestlé’s mission to create a waste-free future.
“At Nestlé, we are committed to building a waste-free future and recognize the crucial role plastic waste workers play in reducing pollution and facilitating a circular economy,” Uwadoka said. “By equipping these essential workers with the necessary skills and knowledge, we help improve their quality of life and enhance their productivity.”

At the opening ceremony in Abuja, the Director General of NESREA, Prof. Innocent Barikor, applauded Nestlé’s leadership in supporting frontline waste workers.
“Waste workers are often unrecognized, yet they play a crucial role in combating plastic pollution,” Barikor said. “Nestlé’s focus on their health, safety, and empowerment is commendable.”
Echoing the sentiment at the Lagos event, Engr. Mayowa Elefin, Managing Director of Maladase Ecopreneur Management Company Limited, described the training as impactful and timely.

“This initiative has provided valuable knowledge and practical skills that will enhance our staff’s ability to maintain safe operations and improve productivity,” Elefin stated.
Other key stakeholders present at the events included senior officials from NESREA, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board, the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Lagos State Government, and leaders from WAPAN and RAN.
The SHE training was implemented by ImpactCrest Consulting and aligns with Nestlé Nigeria’s broader goal of enhancing quality of life while advancing a healthier planet.

Through initiatives like this, Nestlé Nigeria continues to play a vital role in building a sustainable circular economy and fostering inclusive growth in the communities it serves.
