The Nigerian Army has rescued 16 persons abducted by suspected kidnappers in Kogi State following a coordinated search and rescue operation involving multiple security agencies and local security groups.
The victims were abducted on Sunday, August 9, when armed criminals attacked commuters along the Ojuwo, Ajengo and Memarebo as well as Ojiwo and Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.
Acting on credible intelligence that the victims had been taken towards Adumu Community in Dekina Local Government Area, troops of 21 Battalion and personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship Lugard launched a joint operation with the Nigeria Police Force, vigilantes and local hunters.
The security team tracked the fleeing kidnappers into the area and eventually made contact with the criminals. A fierce gun battle followed as the troops and their counterparts moved to rescue the abducted commuters.
Unable to withstand the superior firepower and coordinated assault of the security forces, the kidnappers abandoned their victims and fled into the surrounding forest. Some of the fleeing criminals were reportedly wounded during the exchange of fire.
The rescued victims comprised six adult males, six adult females and four children. The Nigerian Army said they were undergoing documentation and medical assessment before being reunited with their families.
The operation, however, recorded a casualty on the side of the local security team, as one hunter who participated in the rescue effort was killed during the encounter. One police officer also sustained injuries and is receiving medical attention.
The Army commended the courage of the fallen hunter and the injured police officer, noting that their sacrifice demonstrated the risks faced by security personnel and local partners in the fight against kidnapping and other violent crimes.
The successful operation, according to the Army, further demonstrated the importance of collaboration among the military, police, local security groups and communities in tackling criminal activities. It also reaffirmed the resolve of security forces to deny kidnappers freedom of action and protect citizens across the country.
