The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Murtala Muhammed Area Command (MMAC), has intercepted 17 live scorpions at the export section of the Lagos airport in a renewed crackdown on the illegal trade in endangered species.
Confirming the seizure on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Michael Awe, said the act violated the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
“We have seized 17 live scorpions here, which fall under CITES. This place is not, and will not be, convenient for those engaged in illegal export,” Awe said.
The CAC recalled that the command had previously intercepted 340 snakes at the NAHCO export shed, stressing that the wildlife seizures highlight the growing threat of illicit trafficking through air cargo terminals.
According to him, the command has intensified surveillance and directed officers to remain proactive in curbing wildlife smuggling. “Most of these animals are going extinct in Nigeria and Africa. It’s a serious global issue, and we are fully on the ground to ensure it does not thrive here,” he said.
Awe added that the seized scorpions would be handed over to the appropriate agencies for necessary action in line with international conservation protocols.
He further cautioned traffickers that MMAC will no longer serve as a safe haven for illicit wildlife exports, affirming that daily monitoring and strict enforcement are in place to deter further attempts.
