The House of Representatives has approved a total budget of N479.508 billion for the Nigerian Communications Commission for the 2026 fiscal year, reinforcing federal support for the nation’s expanding telecommunications sector.
The approval was granted during plenary at the National Assembly in Abuja following the adoption of the report submitted by the House Committee on Communications.
Chairman of the committee, Peter Akpatason, told lawmakers that the approved expenditure would be funded through the commission’s Statutory Revenue Fund for the 2026 financial year.
According to the approved breakdown, the sum of N124.44 billion was allocated for recurrent expenditure to support operational and administrative activities of the commission.
Lawmakers also approved N26.77 billion for capital expenditure aimed at strengthening telecommunications infrastructure and expanding regulatory capacity across the country.
In addition, N32.01 billion was earmarked for special projects expected to enhance digital connectivity, sector innovation, and regulatory efficiency within the communications industry.
The budget further provides N20 billion as transfer to the Universal Service Provision Fund to improve telecommunications access in underserved and unserved communities nationwide.
The commission is equally expected to remit N276.27 billion into the Federal Government’s coffers before the end of the 2026 fiscal cycle ending December 31.
The approval highlights growing legislative confidence in the telecommunications industry as a major contributor to national revenue generation, digital transformation, and economic diversification.
Industry stakeholders believe the approved budget will strengthen broadband expansion, improve digital inclusion, and accelerate Nigeria’s drive toward a more technology driven economy.
