The Nigerian Army has elevated six Majors to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, with a strong charge to justify the confidence reposed in them as they assume higher responsibilities.
The General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Adebayo Babalola, gave the directive during a decoration ceremony held at the 81 Division Officers’ Mess in Victoria Island, Lagos.
The ceremony, which took place on April 9, 2026, formally marked the transition of the officers into a new phase of leadership within the Army’s command structure.
In a statement issued by Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of 81 Division, the GOC urged the newly promoted officers to redouble their efforts in service to the nation.
Babalola emphasised that their elevation was not merely ceremonial but a call to duty that demands renewed commitment, discipline and professional excellence.
The newly decorated officers include Lieutenant Colonel A Sanusi, Lieutenant Colonel AI Lawal, Lieutenant Colonel LA Ishaku, Lieutenant Colonel BJ Gimba, Lieutenant Colonel MB Sifawa and Lieutenant Colonel GO Uwagboe.
They currently serve in key capacities across the division, ranging from intelligence and training to education, administration and regimental leadership roles.
Congratulating them, the GOC commended their track records, noting that their promotions were earned through consistency, loyalty and demonstrated competence over time.
He stressed that the Nigerian Army places a premium on merit, adding that the new rank comes with heightened expectations and accountability.
“I have carefully observed your progression and I am confident that greater responsibilities await you if you remain focused,” Babalola stated.
He further reminded them that leadership in the military demands sacrifice, integrity and unwavering commitment to institutional values and national security objectives.
The GOC also urged the officers to remain spiritually grounded, advising them to continually seek divine guidance as they navigate the demands of higher command.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Lieutenant Colonel A Sanusi expressed gratitude to God and the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, for the opportunity to serve at a higher level.
Sanusi assured the Army leadership that the officers would justify their promotion through dedication, professionalism and loyalty to duty.
He also acknowledged the support of families, colleagues and subordinates, describing their encouragement as critical to the officers’ career progression.
The ceremony drew a wide array of senior military officials, including formation commanders, staff officers and representatives of various units within the division.
Family members, friends and well wishers were also present, lending a celebratory atmosphere to an event underscored by a clear message of responsibility and performance.
