…Revenge mission backfires as airport detectives smash N15 million heist
The Airport Police Command in Lagos has uncovered a high-value theft ring within the Murtala Muhammed International Airport axis, leading to the arrest of a dismissed employee accused of carting away equipment worth over N15 million from his former company.
The suspect, 28-year-old George Ikpe, was apprehended on April 3, 2026, following what police described as painstaking intelligence gathering and coordinated investigative efforts by operatives of the airport division.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Airport Command, ASP Mohammed Adeola, the arrest marked a significant breakthrough in the Command’s ongoing crackdown on criminal activities within the aviation corridor.
Investigations revealed that the suspect, a former staff member of Vovida Communications Limited, allegedly infiltrated the company’s premises undetected and executed the theft with calculated precision.
The facility, located along the airport axis, was reportedly accessed without authorization, allowing the suspect to remove sensitive and high-value technological equipment critical to the company’s operations.
Police sources disclosed that a detailed analysis of the company’s closed-circuit television footage played a decisive role in tracking the suspect’s movements and ultimately confirming his identity.
Recovered items include two custom-built central processing units valued at over N10 million, while a high-end industrial printer worth nearly N5 million had already been disposed of before the suspect’s arrest.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to carrying out the act as retaliation for the termination of his employment, a motive investigators say underscores the growing trend of insider-enabled security breaches.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, reaffirmed the Command’s zero tolerance stance on crime, warning that the airport environment would remain hostile to criminal elements.
She further assured that the suspect would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations, while urging members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, stressing that community cooperation remains vital in sustaining security within the nation’s aviation gateway.
