At this year’s Goalkeepers 2025 gathering in New York, global leaders and development advocates reiterated the urgent need to safeguard progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with particular emphasis on child health under SDG 3.

The event, themed “We Can’t Stop at Almost,” underscored that meaningful progress on child survival and well-being is intricately tied to interconnected goals, including Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Quality Education (SDG 4), Gender Equality (SDG 5), and Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6).

Spotlighting the pivotal role of partnerships, Chiemelie Ezeobi, Features Editor at THISDAY Newspaper and a Goalkeeper, stressed that achieving the ambitious 2030 Agenda hinges on SDG 17, which calls for collaboration across governments, the private sector, civil society, and communities.

“Central to delivering all 17 Goals is SDG 17 Partnerships for the Goals which unites diverse stakeholders. My role within Goal 17 is to strengthen collaborations, amplify innovations, and mobilise investments to drive lasting change,” Ezeobi said.

This year’s focus on partnerships reflects the consensus that no single actor can achieve the SDGs in isolation. According to Ezeobi, collaborative efforts are essential to accelerate action, end preventable child deaths, and secure a healthier future for children globally.

The Goalkeepers platform, an initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, serves as a convening space for champions of the SDGs to share insights, inspire innovation, and galvanize commitments toward achieving the 2030 targets.
