The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos, AIG Olohundare Jimoh Moshood, has warned against the growing misuse of social media to spread false information capable of eroding public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force and undermining national security.
Speaking during a courtesy visit by members of the Peace, Progress and Unity Global Initiative (PPUGI) to the Zone 2 Command Headquarters in Lagos, Jimoh expressed concern over the increasing circulation of fabricated narratives targeting security institutions.
He maintained that while constructive criticism remains essential for institutional reforms, deliberate dissemination of falsehoods designed to tarnish the image of the police should never be encouraged.
The AIG observed that some individuals deliberately exploit social media platforms to spread misinformation, incite public unrest and widen the gap between law enforcement agencies and citizens, often for personal or financial benefits.
According to him, digital platforms should primarily serve as channels for public enlightenment, civic education and responsible information sharing rather than becoming instruments for promoting narratives capable of destabilising the country.
Jimoh lamented that a growing number of online users had become what he described as “social media bandits,” stressing that freedom of expression must always be exercised responsibly and within the boundaries of truth and public interest.
He assured Nigerians that the Nigeria Police Force remains receptive to genuine public feedback aimed at improving operational efficiency, accountability and service delivery, adding that identified shortcomings would continue to receive prompt attention.
The Zone 2 Police boss commended PPUGI for recognising the sacrifices of police personnel, noting that the visit marked the first time an organisation had formally honoured officers of the command in such a significant manner.
He described the gesture as a strong demonstration of public support for law enforcement officers who daily risk their lives to protect citizens and safeguard national assets.
Jimoh emphasised that stronger partnerships between civil society organisations and security agencies would deepen community policing, enhance public trust and strengthen collective efforts towards maintaining peace and security nationwide.
The AIG also praised the organisation’s focus on the mental health and welfare of police officers, stressing that emotionally and psychologically healthy personnel are better positioned to respond effectively to security challenges.
He dedicated the honour bestowed on him by PPUGI to officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, saying every success recorded by police leadership is built on the commitment and sacrifices of personnel serving across the country.
Jimoh reaffirmed the commitment of the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to people-centred policing, improved welfare for officers and sustained engagement with communities as critical pillars of effective policing.
He assured the delegation that Zone 2 Command would continue to strengthen collaboration with community groups, civil society organisations and other stakeholders in advancing sustainable peace, public safety and national security.
Earlier, President of PPUGI, H.E. Ambassador Dr. Prevail Farida Olayinka Ahmad, praised AIG Jimoh for his exemplary leadership and dedication to protecting lives and property. She called for greater public support for police officers, advocated increased attention to their mental health and welfare, announced plans to establish Community Peace Clubs across Lagos, and disclosed that the organisation would hold a national walk on August 15 to promote men’s mental health, peaceful coexistence and stronger collaboration between citizens and security agencies.
