The Nigeria Police Force has clarified remarks made by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, during a stakeholders’ meeting in Makurdi, Benue State, stating that reports alleging he issued a “shoot on sight” directive are false and misleading.
The clarification followed widespread media reports and social media posts claiming that the police chief ordered officers to shoot suspected criminals on sight during the engagement with stakeholders in the state.
According to the police, the Inspector General did not authorize any indiscriminate use of firearms. Rather, he reminded officers that they had been adequately briefed on Force Order 237, which clearly outlines the legal framework governing the use of firearms by police personnel.
The Force explained that Force Order 237 provides operational guidelines on when officers may lawfully deploy firearms while carrying out their constitutional duties, in strict compliance with established Rules of Engagement.
The Inspector General emphasized that officers are expected to exercise professionalism, restraint and sound judgment whenever situations require the possible use of force.
He also reaffirmed that the Nigeria Police Force would not tolerate unlawful possession of firearms or the continued wave of violent killings threatening public peace and national security.
The police stressed that the Inspector General’s comments were aimed at reinforcing lawful policing standards and should not be interpreted as a blanket authorization for the use of lethal force.
