Ahead of the Anambra Governorship Election scheduled for November 8, 2025, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, MNIPS, PhD, has directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Tactical Commanders across the state to embark on targeted, intelligence-driven security operations to curb political thuggery, cult-related violence, and illegal possession of firearms.
In a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, in Awka, CP Orutugu emphasized that the directive is a proactive measure to ensure peaceful, credible, and violence-free elections in Anambra State.
The Commissioner ordered coordinated raids, heightened patrols, and surveillance of identified flashpoints across the 21 local government areas of the state. He explained that credible intelligence reports indicate that certain political actors and groups may be attempting to mobilize youths for violent disruptions before and during the election period.
“The Command will not tolerate any form of political thuggery, voter intimidation, or attempt to destabilize the electoral process. Anyone caught trying to incite violence or carry out unlawful acts will face the full weight of the law,” CP Orutugu warned.
CP Orutugu reiterated the neutral and non-partisan stance of the Nigeria Police Force, stressing that officers are under strict instruction to remain professional and impartial throughout the electioneering process.
He stated that the primary duty of the Police is to protect lives and property, uphold public order, and safeguard the integrity of the democratic process without fear, favour, or political influence.
“Our loyalty is to the Constitution and the people of Nigeria, not to any political party or interest. We are fully committed to ensuring that every voter participates freely and safely in the coming election,”
he affirmed.
The Police Commissioner also called on political parties, candidates, traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support law enforcement efforts by reporting suspicious movements, inflammatory activities, or acts capable of threatening public peace.
He urged all stakeholders to conduct campaigns responsibly, promote issue-based politics, and avoid statements that could incite violence or division ahead of the polls.
CP Orutugu reassured citizens that the Anambra State Police Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, has put in place comprehensive measures to secure the electoral space before, during, and after the election.
“We are determined to deliver a peaceful and secure election where every vote counts,” he concluded.
