Air Peace Makes Historic Inaugural Flight to London Heathrow — A Milestone In Nigeria’s 100 Years of Aviation

Today marks a defining moment in Nigeria’s aviation history as Air Peace, the nation’s leading international carrier, officially launches its maiden flight from Abuja to London Heathrow Airport. The historic event, taking place on Sunday, October 26, 2025, coincides with Nigeria’s centennial celebration of aviation, making it a double milestone for the nation.

The inaugural flight to London Heathrow operated with a Boeing 777-200ER (Flight P-47576) positions Air Peace as the first Nigerian airline in over a decade to operate direct commercial services to the United Kingdom’s busiest airport.
For Nigeria, this moment is not only symbolic of growth but also of renewed confidence in the nation’s aviation sector, which celebrates 100 years of flight this year.

According to stakeholders, the centennial celebrations will climax on December 1, 2025, at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja, under the theme: “100 Years of Aviation in Nigeria The Pains, The Gains, and The Progress.”

The event will bring together aviation veterans, business leaders, regulators, academics, and industry professionals to reflect on Nigeria’s aviation journey. The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development will serve as Chief Host.

Air Peace’s debut at London Heathrow rekindles memories of the Nigeria Airways era, which last operated to Heathrow 22 years ago, and Arik Air, which ceased similar operations 13 years ago.
This new service also introduces direct competition for British Airways, which has long enjoyed a monopoly on the route between Nigeria and the UK.

The airline had previously launched flights to London Gatwick in March 2024, but today’s Heathrow service marks an expansion into one of the world’s most prestigious international hubs.

In line with aviation tradition, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos came alive with pre-flight festivities, featuring speeches from government officials, regulators, and Air Peace executives.

Passengers on board the inaugural flight were treated to special Nigerian delicacies, commemorative souvenirs, and warm hospitality from the cockpit and cabin crew, dressed in the airline’s elegant uniforms.

Upon arrival at London Heathrow, the aircraft was expected to receive the traditional “Water Cannon Salute” a symbolic gesture of welcome for new airline entrants a practice popularized in the 1990s by Salt Lake International Airport in the United States.

Interestingly, Heathrow also marked a rare aviation milestone today as three new long-haul airlines made their debut at the airport on the same day: Riyadh Air (Saudi Arabia), IndiGo Airlines (India), and Air Peace (Nigeria) underscoring Heathrow’s growing global connectivity.

The Aviation Round Table (ART), Nigeria’s foremost aviation think-tank, will be among dignitaries and Nigerians in the United Kingdom celebrating the arrival of Air Peace at Heathrow.
Their presence symbolizes national pride, as the Nigerian flag once again flies high at one of the world’s busiest airports, a testament to resilience, innovation, and patriotism.

This milestone would not have been possible without the vision and determination of Dr. Allen Onyema, the Chairman and CEO of Air Peace, whose passion for national service continues to inspire confidence in Nigeria’s aviation renaissance.

As Nigerians at home and abroad celebrate this landmark occasion, one song resonates in many hearts:

“To God be the Glory.”
