The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 2 Command, AIG Adegoke M. Fayoade, mni, psc, has convened a high-level strategic meeting with operational commanders overseeing the Idi-Iroko, Imeko, and Aiyetoro corridors in Ogun State. The meeting addressed growing public concerns about the proliferation of checkpoints and alleged extortion by security personnel along these key border routes.
According to CSP Ayuba T. Umma, anipr, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer (ZPPRO), Zone 2 Command Headquarters, Onikan-Lagos, the session centered on rationalizing and regulating security checkpoints to enhance operational efficiency while eliminating unprofessional practices that inconvenience motorists and residents.
AIG Fayoade described the current situation as “embarrassing” and stressed the need for officers to uphold professionalism, integrity, and discipline in all security operations. He emphasized that checkpoints must serve their intended purpose, ensuring safety and law enforcement rather than becoming avenues for harassment or extortion.
The AIG further called for stronger collaboration among security agencies and community stakeholders, noting that synergy and trust are crucial to effective border policing. He tasked senior officers to continually sensitize their subordinates on maintaining decorum and respect for human rights while on duty.
To enforce compliance, AIG Fayoade ordered the immediate establishment of a Task Force to monitor, supervise, and regulate checkpoint operations within the Zone. The Task Force will ensure that all security personnel adhere strictly to laid-down operational standards, transparency, and accountability in their daily assignments.
The Zone 2 Command reiterated its commitment to maintaining a secure, corruption-free, and citizen-friendly policing environment, particularly across border communities under its jurisdiction.
