The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed deep shock over the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a 29-year-old journalist with Arise News Channel who was killed during an armed robbery attack at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.
Fondly known as *Sommie*, the late news anchor, reporter, and producer was described by the union as a brilliant and passionate professional who brought intellect, warmth, and integrity to her work. She was also a qualified lawyer and a source of inspiration to colleagues across the industry.
In a condolence message, the NUJ said her passing represents not only a devastating loss to her family and the Arise News community, but also a blow to the journalism profession and the nation at large.
The union condemned the killing, calling it a “heinous act,” and urged the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation to ensure that those responsible are swiftly arrested and prosecuted.
The NUJ reaffirmed its solidarity with journalists nationwide while pledging continued advocacy for the safety and protection of media professionals.
