Nigeria Customs Boss Pushes Reforms, Secures IATF2027 Hosting Rights

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, has reaffirmed that customs reforms and trade facilitation remain pivotal to unlocking Africa’s economic potential and enhancing the competitiveness of exporters on the global stage.

Speaking on Friday, September 5, 2025, at the ongoing Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF2025) in Algiers, Algeria, Adeniyi highlighted the Nigeria Customs Service’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and innovation in driving continental trade.

“Customs reforms are no longer optional; they are essential for Africa to realise its full potential in trade. We must prioritise efficiency, transparency, and innovation to strengthen the competitiveness of African exporters and advance continental integration,” he stated.

Adeniyi outlined key reforms already underway within the Nigeria Customs Service, including the digitalisation of clearance processes, improved enforcement mechanisms, and capacity-building programmes, all aimed at fostering a seamless trading environment.

The Intra-African Trade Fair, inaugurated in 2018, has evolved into the continent’s premier platform for trade, investment, and economic exchange. The 2025 edition is expected to generate \$44 billion in deals, connecting thousands of exhibitors, governments, and investors.

In a major boost for Nigeria, it was announced during the event that the country has secured the hosting rights for the next edition of the Trade Fair (IATF2027), a decision widely applauded as recognition of Nigeria’s leadership in regional integration and ongoing reforms.

“With Nigeria hosting IATF2027, we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to showcase the impact of our reforms and demonstrate how Customs can drive sustainable economic growth. The Nigeria Customs Service remains committed to creating a transparent, efficient, and technology-driven system that benefits all stakeholders,” Adeniyi added.

The announcement positions Nigeria at the centre of Africa’s trade future, underscoring the link between customs reforms and the broader goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
