The Ogun State Government has refuted recent claims by the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) alleging that the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun is guilty of failing to remit ₦82 billion in pension deductions. The state government described the allegations as misleading, politically motivated, and lacking in historical context.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by Akinleye Olu-Phillips, Media Consultant to Hon. Adekunle Akinlade, the government dismissed the PDP’s accusations as a mix of “half-truths, historical amnesia, and outright mischief,” insisting that the figure being cited was not accrued solely during the current administration.
According to the statement, the ₦82 billion liability is a cumulative burden that spans across successive administrations, including those led by the PDP itself.
“It is either deliberate dishonesty or an unfortunate lapse in memory for the PDP to ignore its own role in the historical accumulation of the said obligations,” the statement noted.
The government further stated that the Abiodun administration has paid several billions of naira over the past six years to address outstanding pension arrears and gratuities, contrary to claims of neglect. It also emphasized that the ongoing pension reform efforts are part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainable governance and long-term worker welfare.
“The framework for pension reform under Governor Abiodun is a well-considered component of the administration’s broader agenda,” the statement said, noting that plans are in motion to fully implement the Contributory Pension System (CPS). This includes establishing pension boards, creating a comprehensive pension database, and adopting a phased approach to clear legacy debts.
The government called on opposition parties to engage in constructive criticism rooted in verifiable facts rather than what it described as “spurious accusations” and “political mudslinging.”
“Sincerity is not just demanded from government; it is also expected of those who wish to hold government accountable,” Olu-Phillips said.
He stressed that Governor Abiodun remains committed to transparent leadership, workers’ welfare, and responsible reform, adding that the administration will not be distracted by “politically-motivated distractions.”
The statement concluded with a call for more responsible political engagement, urging critics to put the interests of Ogun State workers above partisan considerations.
