The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has directed all vessels operating within Nigerian waters to fully comply with the provisions of Annex VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
In a statement signed by the Deputy Director/Head of Public Relations, Mr. Osagie Edward, FNIPR, the agency emphasized that MARPOL Annex VI domesticated through the Merchant Shipping Act, 2007 specifically targets the reduction of air pollution from ships.
NIMASA’s Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, reaffirmed the agency’s unwavering commitment to protecting Nigeria’s marine environment. He stressed that adherence to MARPOL Annex VI is mandatory for all vessels, as Nigeria continues to align its maritime sector with international standards for safety, security, and environmental sustainability.
“In line with our statutory responsibilities under the NIMASA Act 2007 and the Merchant Shipping Act 2007, we have issued a Marine Notice outlining the obligations of shipowners, charterers, and shipping companies. While we support the growth of maritime business in Nigeria, we remain resolute in upholding global environmental standards,” Dr. Mobereola stated.
NIMASA further reiterated that it will strengthen monitoring and enforcement efforts and continue to collaborate with industry stakeholders to ensure comprehensive compliance with international environmental regulations across Nigerian waters.
