Nigerian Army Warns South East Residents Against Digitally Manipulated Content

The Headquarters of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army and the Joint Task Force South-East Operation UDO KA (JTF-SE OPUK) has cautioned residents of the South-East region to be wary of misleading and digitally manipulated content circulating on social media.

The warning follows the re-circulation of an old voiceover video falsely alleging a conspiracy between the Federal Government, South-East and Northern Governors to transport weapons through airports for a purported attack on South-East residents.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, described the video as “entirely deceptive” and a calculated attempt to incite ethnic tensions and create fear among the populace.

“Ordinarily, the Division would not dignify such baseless allegations with a response,” the statement read, “but in line with our overarching mission to ensure peace and security for socio-economic development in the region, we find it necessary to strongly condemn the misinformation designed to instil fear and cause public anxiety.”

Lt. Col. Ayeni reaffirmed that all security agencies operating in the South-East have continued to neutralise threats effectively and foster peaceful coexistence. He added that any efforts to destabilise the region’s security architecture would ultimately prove futile.

The statement urged members of the public to remain vigilant and rely solely on accurate, verified information from credible sources, particularly in an era where artificial intelligence tools and digital manipulation are being used to spread falsehoods.

Lt. Col. Ayeni further disclosed that security agencies are actively trailing the individuals responsible for the circulation of the misleading video. He also called on residents to promote unity, mutual trust, and peace in support of national security.
