After years of inactivity, the familiar sound of a moving train has once again returned to Jos, the Plateau State capital, marking a major milestone in the state’s transportation sector.
In a collaborative effort between the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Plateau State Government, the Jos–Bukuru passenger train service has been revived, sparking renewed hope for safer, cheaper, and more efficient public transportation in the region.
The reintroduction of the rail service, alongside the existing Metro bus scheme, is being hailed as not just a transportation development, but a symbol of economic rejuvenation and infrastructural progress under the administration of Governor Caleb Mutfwang.
The reactivation follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Plateau State Government and the NRC. According to the Commissioner for Transport, Davou Jatau, the initiative is part of the governor’s broader vision to improve mobility, lower the cost of living, and promote local commerce.
“This initiative is a result of the vision and determination of Governor Caleb Mutfwang to transform the transport sector in Plateau. Our goal is to not only restore what was lost but to build a sustainable, affordable, and people-centered transport system that will benefit all,” Jatau said.
The Jos–Bukuru route, covering a strategically important corridor, is expected to ease traffic congestion and reduce transportation costs for residents.
When the train commenced operations on Monday, the Jos station was abuzz with excitement. Among the crowd were families, traders, civil servants, and students—many experiencing train travel for the first time, and others reliving memories of Nigeria’s former railway glory.
“I never thought I would see a train run again in Jos,” said Mr. Matthew Iliya, a retired civil servant. “This is more than transportation; it is a return of history and dignity.”
Passengers commended the government for the affordability of the service—N300 for first class and N200 for second class—and the pledge for consistency in operations. “The government has really put a smile on our faces,” said Miss Rejoice David, a student. “This will help people like me who cannot afford to take expensive taxis every day.”
Adamu Abdullahi, Public Relations Officer of the NRC, noted that the relaunch was community-focused. “This train is not just about movement. It is about community connection, reducing hardship, and creating access to economic opportunities,” he said. “We assure residents that this is not a one-off event. This is a long-term commitment.”
In Plateau State, where many areas are underserved by infrastructure, the railway’s return could be transformative. Small business owners are optimistic that it will improve trade and access to markets.
“This is going to help us move goods faster and cheaper. It also means we can go to Jos early and return in time to sell in our community,” said Mrs. Joyce Pam, a tomato trader from Bukuru.
“Transportation is the backbone of the economy. When people and goods move easily, markets grow, jobs are created, and livelihoods improve,” added local entrepreneur Christopher Ujah.
Governor Mutfwang’s administration has prioritized infrastructure, youth empowerment, and economic recovery. The relaunch of the train service is a concrete step toward realizing those goals.
As the trains steadily shuttle between Jos and Bukuru, they carry with them more than passengers—they carry the promise of a better future for Plateau State.
