A tragic incident has rocked the Durumi area of Abuja as operatives of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command arrested a man, identified as Philip Jallo, following the drowning of a three-year-old boy in an uncovered septic tank within a residential compound.
According to a statement released by the FCT Police Command, the incident occurred around 9:00 pm on Tuesday, July 16, 2025. The child, who was reportedly playing within the premises of the compound in Durumi 2, slipped and fell into the uncovered soak-away pit filled with faeces. Despite efforts to rescue him, the boy was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the uncovered septic tank had been a source of concern to residents for some time. Neighbours had reportedly warned and pleaded with Jallo—believed to be responsible for the property—to secure the pit, but their appeals were allegedly ignored.
FCT Commissioner of Police has expressed deep sorrow over the incident and extended condolences to the grieving family. He also used the opportunity to emphasize the importance of environmental safety and the responsibility of residents to maintain safe surroundings.
The Commissioner further advised parents and guardians to remain vigilant and ensure constant supervision of their children, especially in residential areas with potential hazards.
Meanwhile, the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the arrest and reiterated the Police’s commitment to ensuring justice and preventing such avoidable tragedies.
