The Anambra State Police Command has reopened investigations into the death of Mr. Okechukwu Akaneme, a prominent member of the Onitsha business community and former President of the Onitsha Chamber of Commerce, following renewed public interest and allegations surrounding the circumstances of his demise.
Mr. Akaneme reportedly sustained severe spinal injuries during an enforcement operation allegedly conducted by the Anambra State Waste Management Authority (ASWAMA), accompanied by armed police officers, on October 11, 2024. According to emerging reports, the injuries he sustained during the incident contributed to his eventual death on July 10, 2025.
In an official statement, the Anambra State Police Command expressed condolences to the family, friends, and business associates of the late Akaneme, acknowledging his notable contributions to the economic growth of the state.
The police also confirmed that an initial internal inquiry had been launched following the October 2024 incident. Preliminary findings at the time indicated that certain actions during the enforcement operation deviated from standard police procedures. However, with Mr. Akaneme’s passing, the case has now been reopened for a more thorough investigation.
To this end, the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka has been directed to revisit the case file and undertake a comprehensive probe into the original operation and all subsequent developments. The police promised full cooperation with all relevant state agencies to ensure the truth is uncovered.
Reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to justice and accountability, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, stated that no officer is above the law, and any personnel found culpable will be subjected to appropriate disciplinary and legal action.
The Command has assured the public of its resolve to uphold the rule of law and human rights as the renewed investigation unfolds.
The statement was issued on July 26, 2025, by SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command.
