The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Mr. Peter Obi, on Thursday, September 25, participated in a series of events marking Black Congressional Week in the United States, with a focus on Georgia State engagements.
Obi attended the Congressional Black Caucus Week Reception, hosted by U.S. Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock at the Senate Kennedy Caucus Room. Senator Warnock, noted for his advocacy for Africa’s development, encouraged Obi to share insights on African democracy and sustainable growth.
The former Anambra State Governor also held discussions with Ms. Kim Clark, Chief Executive Officer of Georgia Power, the state’s largest independent power company which generates and distributes more than 20,000 megawatts of electricity nationwide. Obi described the engagement as deeply insightful, particularly in light of Nigeria’s ongoing power sector challenges.
At the One Voice Africa event, a platform dedicated to defending the dignity of Black immigrants, Obi urged participants to take greater interest in promoting good governance across Africa. He stressed that the continent’s enormous potential could only be realised under visionary and responsible leadership.
The highlight of the day’s engagements was the conferment of Honorary Citizenship of Georgia on Obi by the State of Georgia, an honour he described as humbling.
Reflecting on the day’s activities, Obi said his participation was about “learning, serving, and remaining committed to building a new Nigeria that is truly possible.”
