From the solemn strains of hymns to the heartfelt cadence of tributes, the life of Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (Rtd) was celebrated over two days of remembrance that blended faith, gratitude, and nostalgia.
The farewell began Friday evening at St. John Military Protestant Church, Bonny Cantonment, with a Service of Songs steeped in scripture and song. Former First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan read from Ecclesiastes 2:1–12, while Mrs. Esther Yemisi delivered the third reading. Between the prayers, tributes flowed in some shared in person, others sent from across the globe painting a portrait of a man whose life left ripples far beyond his naval uniform.
Saturday’s funeral service drew mourners once more, leading to the solemn interment at Vaults and Gardens, Ikoyi, before the gathering shifted to the Naval Dockyard Limited, Victoria Island, for a reception that mingled grief with gratitude.
A LIFE WOVEN ACROSS REGIONS
The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) described Olubolade as “a nobleman and illustrious son” whose passing came “at a time he was most needed.” In a statement signed by National Chairman Amb. (Dr.) Godknows Boladei Igali, the forum remembered him as a sailor, politician, and administrator who balanced firm leadership with deep humanity.
Though Yoruba by birth, Olubolade earned the affectionate title “Ijaw man in spirit” for his dedication to Bayelsa State, where he served as Military Administrator. PANDEF urged his family to cherish the impact of his life, noting that legacy is measured not by years, but by the lives touched.
A STATESMAN IN SERVICE
Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri called him a “dual citizen” of Nigeria Yoruba by heritage, Bayelsan by service recalling how Olubolade wore Bayelsa’s traditional attire with pride. He told of a tense moment in the state’s history when Olubolade could have chosen force but instead chose peace, sparing innocent lives. Diri reflected on Olubolade’s 70th birthday celebration in Yenagoa, which now feels like a quiet farewell.
From the Southwest, Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji urged the family to find comfort in the glowing tributes. He thanked Bayelsa for honoring “one of Ekiti’s finest” in a way that reflected national unity.
MEMORIES FROM THE DECK AND BEYOND
Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olumide Olugbode, Olubolade’s former Aide-de-Camp, spoke of a visionary leader whose influence spanned the Navy, governance, and cultural preservation. He recalled Olubolade’s role in laying Bayelsa’s governance foundations and creating the State Council for Arts and Culture, a legacy that continues to preserve Ijaw heritage.
Olugbode said Olubolade’s later ministerial roles including Minister of Special Duties, Minister of State for the FCT, and Minister of Police Affairs were proof of his competence and integrity in both military and democratic settings.
Rear Admiral Rotimi Ademoletin shared how their friendship began at the Nigerian Defence Academy, crediting Olubolade for persuading him to join the 16th Regular Course, a decision that shaped his career. Rear Admiral John Jonah offered lighter moments, including a nerve testing driving lesson in India that had him on the highway at 100 km/h after just one hour behind the wheel.
A LASTING GOODBYE
As the sun set over Lagos, the ceremonies closed with the sentiment that Olubolade’s story is far from over. He was more than a naval officer or public servant he was a bridge between regions, a leader who prized peace over power, and a friend whose influence spanned decades.
In the words of one mourner, “We say goodbye for now, but never goodbye forever.”
