Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), CFR, the 21st Indigenous Chief of the Naval Staff, has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, describing him as a towering national figure whose life epitomized service, sacrifice, and discipline.
In a statement issued on July 14, 2025, Vice Admiral Gambo expressed profound sadness at Buhari’s passing, noting that the loss is not only felt by his immediate family but by the entire Nigerian nation, which he served with unmatched dignity.
Reflecting on his personal and professional relationship with the late President, the retired Naval Chief recounted his appointment as Chief of the Naval Staff in January 2021, a role he held until the end of Buhari’s administration in 2023. He described it as one of the greatest privileges of his life.
He also recalled Buhari’s presence at the Navy’s Presidential Fleet Review in Lagos — his last major military assignment before leaving office — where the transformation of the Nigerian Navy under his leadership was commemorated.
Gambo highlighted Buhari’s enduring integrity, simplicity, and incorruptible character, which he said became the signature of his public life. He described the late President as a father figure, firm but fair, deeply principled, and devoted to the well-being and growth of military personnel.
According to him, Buhari’s governance style, austere lifestyle, and commitment to anti-corruption set a lasting standard that continues to inspire future generations. He also emphasized Buhari’s compassion for the underprivileged, which shaped both his personal conduct and policy decisions.
The tribute also revealed a personal touch, with Gambo recalling the deep admiration his late mother had for Buhari, and her joy when he was appointed by the man she revered. She also had the opportunity to pay him a personal visit after he left office — a moment Gambo said was among her fondest.
Despite his passing, Gambo affirmed that Buhari’s spirit would continue to live on through the institutions he strengthened and the lives he touched. He offered prayers for the former President, asking Almighty Allah to grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort his family and the nation.
Vice Admiral Gambo’s tribute stands as one of the most poignant from the military community, capturing the respect and gratitude shared by those who served under the former Commander-in-Chief.
