Union Bank Secures Global PCI DSS 4.0.1 Certification

Union Bank of Nigeria has secured certification under the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) version 4.0.1, reinforcing its commitment to protecting customers’ payment card data and strengthening safeguards against financial fraud.

Union Bank of Nigeria has attained certification under PCI DSS version 4.0.1, the global benchmark for securing payment card account data.

The certification, which took effect on August 11, 2026, underscores the bank’s continued efforts to strengthen its payment security infrastructure and protect customers from data breaches and payment related fraud.

PCI DSS establishes technical and operational requirements for organisations that store, process or transmit payment card information. Compliance demonstrates that the bank’s systems and processes meet stringent international requirements for safeguarding card data.

The assessment covered key areas of Union Bank’s operations, including network infrastructure, card issuance, automated teller machines, point of sale transactions and payment processing.

It also examined the bank’s reconciliation and settlement processes, chargeback management, dispute resolution and retail banking operations.

Union Bank was assessed and certified under the Service Provider category, following an extensive compliance exercise conducted over a 12 month period.

The process involved quarterly assessments and the participation of departmental, business and functional heads across the bank, with technical support from cybersecurity firm, Digital Encode.

The final independent assessment was conducted by CyberCube, an accredited Qualified Security Assessor, further strengthening the credibility of the certification.

Commenting on the development, Union Bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Yetunde B. Oni, said protecting customers’ information remained central to the bank’s operations.

Oni said the certification demonstrated that the bank’s payment systems and processes had met a rigorous global security standard, while commending employees whose efforts contributed to maintaining strong data protection practices.

She added that the renewed certification would ensure continuity in Union Bank’s PCI DSS compliance, in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s requirement for banks to maintain continuous compliance without any lapse.
