The Nteje Development Union (NDU) Lagos Branch has concluded plans for a landmark general election scheduled for August 2, 2026, during which members will elect a new executive committee to steer the affairs of the union for the next tenure. The event will also feature the commissioning of a newly completed ultra modern toilet facility donated to the association by Anataogu Age Grade.
The dual event is expected to attract members from across Lagos, as it combines democratic leadership transition with the unveiling of a community development project aimed at improving welfare and strengthening the union’s infrastructure.

Speaking on behalf of Anataogu Age Grade, Chief Arinze Nwoye said the toilet project was conceived as a practical contribution to the wellbeing of members. He explained that the initiative reflects the age grade’s commitment to ensuring every member benefits from collective development while encouraging others to invest in projects that will advance the growth of the union.
The outgoing Chairman of the union, Chief Engr. Chinedu Orakwue (Oputa Obie Na Aborgu), reaffirmed his commitment to a smooth transition of leadership. He noted that his tenure had come to an end and expressed confidence that the incoming executives would consolidate on existing achievements by promoting unity, inclusiveness and responsible leadership.

Orakwue also renewed the union’s appeal to renowned philanthropist and medical expert, High Chief Dr. Philip Oranyelu Ozuah, seeking financial support for the construction of a befitting Nteje Town Hall in Lagos. According to him, the project remains a priority for the association and aligns with its long term vision of providing a permanent home for members in the state.
He described the proposed town hall as a legacy project designed to serve as the centre for meetings, cultural activities, empowerment programmes, educational initiatives and welfare services for Nteje indigenes residing in Lagos and neighbouring communities. He added that the facility would preserve the community’s rich heritage while deepening unity among members.

Interest in the forthcoming election has continued to grow, with Prophet Odumegwu Michael Ofokansi and Chief Chinedu Odiaka (Igbonefego I) contesting for the office of Chairman. Tochukwu Udefi is seeking election as Vice Chairman, although he was absent during the presentation of contestants before members.
The race for the office of General Secretary has equally attracted keen interest. Contesting for the position are Mr. Emeka Victor Ekwealo, Mr. Hyacinth Beluchukwu Nwafor, and the incumbent Secretary, Mr. Ekene Nwakaeze. Under the union’s electoral guidelines, the first runner up in the secretary’s contest will automatically serve as Assistant Secretary.
Meanwhile, Mr. Celestine Chidiebere Nwankwo is set to retain his position as Treasurer unopposed, while Chief Chinedu Charles Ebede also remains unchallenged for the office of Financial Secretary.
Chairmanship aspirant Chief Chinedu Odiaka (Igbonefego I) told members that his ambition is driven by a desire to serve rather than occupy office. He pledged to provide accessible, accountable and people centred leadership capable of transforming the Lagos Branch into a model community organisation founded on unity, transparency and service.
Odiaka further stated that the proposed Nteje Town Hall represents a strategic investment in the future of the community. He said the project complements his vision of building lasting institutions that will empower members economically, preserve the cultural identity of Nteje people and strengthen ties with their homeland.

General Secretary aspirant Mr. Hyacinth Beluchukwu Nwafor assured members that, if elected, he would prioritise transparency, accountability and efficient record management. He promised to ensure accurate documentation of meetings, prompt dissemination of information and open communication that would keep every member fully informed about the activities of the union.
According to him, his manifesto is centred on collective progress rather than personal ambition. He urged members to support his candidacy, promising faithful service, adherence to the union’s core values and unwavering commitment to strengthening the unity and organisational capacity of the association.
The Electoral Committee, chaired by Samuel Uyaemezina with Chigbo Igbokwe and Chukwuma Anyakuba as members, reiterated its commitment to conducting a free, fair and credible election. The committee also appealed to qualified members to indicate interest in the remaining vacant positions of Welfare Officer, Public Relations Officer and Provost before the close of nominations.
The committee further encouraged all eligible members of the Nteje Development Union Lagos Branch to participate actively in the August 2 poll, stressing that the future of the association depends on credible leadership, broad participation and financially responsible executives capable of advancing the union’s development agenda while sustaining its vision of unity and community service.
Organisers described the gathering as a defining moment in the history of the association.
