
The Forward Operating Base FORMOSO has emerged victorious in a thrilling novelty football encounter organised to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy, defeating its host community team from Egweama in a dramatic penalty shootout.
The highly anticipated match, held on Friday at Egweama Community in Brass Local Government Area, attracted residents, naval personnel and community leaders who gathered to witness the anniversary showdown.
Both sides displayed remarkable energy, tactical discipline and determination in a fiercely contested game that kept spectators on the edge throughout regulation time.
Despite several attacking moves and near scoring opportunities from both teams, the encounter ended in a tense goalless draw after 90 minutes of entertaining football action.
The match was eventually decided through penalties, where FOB FORMOSO demonstrated composure and accuracy to edge the host community side 4-3 and lift the anniversary trophy.
Speaking after the encounter, the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, Captain SK Haruna, praised the winning team for its resilience, discipline and fighting spirit throughout the competition.
Haruna also commended members of the host community for their active participation and unwavering support, describing the football match as a symbol of the cordial relationship between the Nigerian Navy and the people of Egweama.
He stated that the novelty match was organised not only to celebrate the Nigerian Navy’s seven decades of dedicated national service, but also to deepen civil military cooperation through sports and community engagement.
The climax of the event was the presentation of the championship trophy to the victorious FOB FORMOSO team amid loud cheers from supporters and invited guests.
Members of the Egweama community team were equally rewarded with cash gifts in recognition of their impressive performance, discipline and outstanding sportsmanship during the anniversary fixture.
The event further highlighted the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to promoting unity, friendship and peaceful coexistence with host communities as the service continues activities marking its historic 70th anniversary celebration.
