EKO 2025 TOURNAMENT: Dolphin Golf Club Kicks Off 13th Edition of Golf & Tour Charity Tournament, Strengthens Support For Military Families With 200 Bags of Rice

The Dolphin Golf Club, on Thursday announced to host the 13th Edition of the Golf and Tour Charity Association Golf Tournament (EKO 2025), bringing together over 150 golfers from across Nigeria for a four-day event featuring charity outreach, networking, tourism, and competitive golfing.

As part of its tradition of service, the association donated 200 bags of rice and assorted relief materials to military widows, reaffirming its commitment to uplifting vulnerable groups within the defence community.

Speaking at the official press briefing, the Deputy Chairman of the Osun State Council of Traditional Rulers and Owa of Igbajo, Oba (Dr.) Ademola Stephen Makinde, who also serves as the Chairman, Local Organising Committee (LOC), described the event as a convergence of “the cream of Nigerian society” with a mission that extends beyond sports.

Oba Makinde emphasized that charity remains central to the association’s identity. “Golf and Tour Charity Association has three pillars: we play golf, we network among ourselves, and we give back to society. Today’s charity is not about giving to beggars, these are widows of fallen officers, pillars of society who deserve support.”

He noted that previous editions involved donations to orphanage homes and cash support to vulnerable communities, stressing that the association avoids publicity around its charity efforts: “We do not make noise about charity. Capture what you can, but our emphasis is on giving quietly and sincerely.”

The LOC Chairman also expressed deep appreciation to the Nigerian Navy for providing full logistical support despite ongoing renovations at the Dolphin Golf Club.

The 13th edition is co-chaired by Rear Admiral Adeniran, with Admiral Adewuye serving as Secretary of the LOC. The event also had in attendance: Brigadier General Mustapha Dennis Onoyiveta (Rtd.) Chief Coordinator, Golf and Tour Charity Association; Retired Captain Adekoya Chairman, Elders Forum; Several retired and serving officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

According to Oba Makinde, membership of the association includes retired top military officers and distinguished civilians, creating a diverse national network bonded by golf and philanthropy.

Chief Coordinator Brigadier General Onoyiveta revealed that the Lagos edition would draw over 150 golfers, significantly boosting local commerce. “These golfers are staying in Lagos hotels, eating within Navy Town and surrounding communities. Caterers, cab operators, caddies, and service providers are already benefiting. Hosting this tournament enhances the socio-economic life of the host community.”

He also highlighted the group’s impressive history: Founded in 2001; First edition held in Calabar; Has now covered over 10 cities across Nigeria; Conducted international tours in Uganda and Côte d’Ivoire; Rotates tournaments between the South (first half) and North (second half) annually. The Lagos 2025 edition was secured after a competitive bidding process involving Abeokuta and Lagos.

Rear Admiral Dogara Albehu reiterated the obligation of accomplished Nigerians to give back. “When the society has given you so much, the right thing is to give back. We have seen it all in service, and before we leave this world, we must pour back into the society that shaped us.”

General Onoyiveta encouraged serving military personnel to embrace golf as part of post-service wellness. “Golf is life. It keeps your blood circulation steady, engages your body and mind, and reduces hospital visits. When you retire with too much idle time, golf becomes your healthy companion.”

He explained that golf’s elite reputation stems from its space requirements, high-value real estate, and sophisticated equipment. “Ikoyi, Maitama, and top golf courses across the world occupy prime real estate. From Lagos to Abuja, golf remains one of the most valuable sports properties globally.”

Programme Line-Up for EKO 2025 includes are as follows: Thursday, Nov 20 (Arrival & Meet-and-Greet); Delegates arrive from across the country; Networking session at the Naval Air Base; Social interaction among retired and serving military officers; Friday, Nov 21 (Group Game & AGM); Shotgun tee-off at all 18 holes simultaneously; Exclusive members-only game; Annual General Meeting to decide the host state for the next edition; Saturday, Nov 22 (Main Tournament & Awards Night); Ceremonial tee-off by the Grand Officer Commanding (GOC) and state government representatives; Open games involving golfers from partner clubs; Awards ceremony at 5 p.m.; After-party “till daybreak”; Sunday, Nov 23 Departure and closing interactions.

The LOC Chairman publicly acknowledged the Nigerian Navy’s leadership for its unwavering support “From the Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command to the Commander NNS WEY Commodore Shehu Tasiu in Navy Town, the hospitality has been exceptional. We remain indebted and truly grateful.”

Speaking on behalf of the widows, Mrs. Ngozi Chizoba expressed profound gratitude to the Commander NNS WEY for his consistent support and compassion. “We sincerely thank the Commander in a very special way. Since he assumed office, he has been carrying us along. That is what we need; care, attention, and someone to talk to. Even when there is no food or money, sometimes all a widow needs is someone who will listen and advise. He has been doing so much for us.”

Mrs. Chizoba recalled recent gestures where the Commander NNS WEY Commodore Shehu Tasiu facilitated external donations for widows within the community. “Not up to two or three months ago, he invited a group that came here to support our women. For all these efforts, we say thank you. God bless you. We are truly grateful.”

Also speaking, Air Vice Marshal Clement Aroriode (Rtd.), a senior retired officer of the Nigerian Air Force and Executive Chairman of the Golf and Tour Association of Nigeria, highlighted the association’s long-standing record of charity, advocacy, and civic engagement. “From Calabar to Benin and across the country, we have built a strong track record. Since 2001, we have held over 13 tournaments. We have also been approved to conduct international tournaments. But beyond playing golf, we engage deeply in charity and national discourse.”

He noted that each tournament provides a platform for dialogue on critical national issues. “Today, for example, we discussed a very sensitive topic Boko Haram in Nigeria. We examined leadership challenges, the efforts being made, and how we can support ongoing security operations. We also discussed how our association can contribute, with partners like the Alexaz Foundation.”

AVM Aroriode then made a formal presentation on behalf of the Golf & Tour Association and the Alexaz Foundation, while making a special request: “We would appreciate it if, on the day the items are officially presented to the widows, a representative from our association and the foundation can be present. This will show that we are supporting the effort, not taking the credit. We also intend to display a banner listing all our sponsors. Our Lagos members will be available to represent us.”

In his remarks, the Commander of NNS WEY, Commodore Shehu Mohammed Tasiu, welcomed the association and acknowledged the socio-economic boost the event brings to the Navy Town community. “As earlier mentioned, this event will benefit Navy Town economically. I believe that after this Golf and Tour Association gathering, the community will be better off in terms of financial inflow, resources, and even sponsorship opportunities for our children.”

He confirmed that the donated 200 bags of rice will be safeguarded until the Navy’s annual widows’ outreach. “Every year, NNS WEY organizes an outreach for widows within and outside the Navy Town community. We have agreed that these items be kept in trust until December 6, when we will host the larger outreach. Only the representatives of the widows are here today to receive them symbolically.”

He appreciated the association’s effort, describing it as timely and impactful.

Miss Alexandra Chibueze Tochi, representing the Alexaz Care Foundation, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to humanitarian service. “At Alexaz Foundation, we believe in impacting lives no matter how little, no matter how great. Standing here among distinguished personalities and being part of this noble cause is an honour. Using golf as a platform to contribute to society is both innovative and meaningful.”

She extended an invitation to well-meaning Nigerians and corporate bodies to support charitable initiatives such as this. “We encourage friends, families, and responsible Nigerians to key into charity programs and sponsorship opportunities. It is a privilege to stand here on behalf of my staff, family, and the foundation.”

Addressing the widows directly, she added: “To the widows, we are here for you. You are the reason we are on this mission. Please remain strong. We will continue to stand with you. This is our small token of love and contribution to society.”

The Dolphin Golf Club’s hosting of the 13th Golf and Tour Charity Association Tournament cements Lagos as a central hub for Nigeria’s growing golf community.
Beyond competition, the event underscores the power of sports to promote unity, wellness, economic impact, and compassion.

With over 150 golfers, nationwide participation, charitable outreach to military widows, and strong backing from the Nigerian Navy, EKO 2025 stands out as one of the association’s most impactful editions yet.
