The Zone 2 Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police has responded to a viral video showing the arrest of Ms. Mercy Attababa, stating that the incident is under review and assuring the public of a transparent investigation.
According to a statement signed by CSP Ayuba T. Umma, Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, the arrest stemmed from a petition filed by Mr. Emeka Okoye, who accused Ms. Attababa and others of assault and issuing threats to his life.
Okoye alleged that on July 13th and 14th, 2025, a group of armed individuals—suspected to be cult members—invaded his residence and threatened him and his family, forcing them to relocate for safety.
Following her arrest and a preliminary inquiry, Ms. Attababa was released to the Welfare Director of the Lagos State University Student Union Government. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2, Adegoke M. Fayoade, has ordered the case be transferred to the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, for a thorough investigation and appropriate follow-up.
The statement also noted that the officers involved in the controversial arrest have been identified and that disciplinary action will be taken where necessary.
The police command assured the public that justice will be served in a transparent and accountable manner.
