Peter Obi Honoured For Consistent Support At World Sickle Cell Day Commemoration In Agulu

Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, was once again lauded for his unwavering support for the annual World Sickle Cell Day commemoration held in Agulu, Anambra State. Although he was unavoidably absent this year due to other engagements, his presence was felt as he was ably represented at the event, continuing a tradition he has upheld since 2017.

In previous years, Mr. Obi has either attended the commemoration in person or delegated Prof. Stella Chinyere Okunna, a respected academic and humanitarian, to represent him. This year, however, with Prof. Okunna engaged in academic duties, another close associate stood in his place, delivering his message of compassion and sustained advocacy for individuals living with sickle cell disorder.

According to the representative, Mr. Obi views the occasion not as a mere formality but as a powerful reminder of the courage and resilience of millions affected by sickle cell anaemia. He reiterated Mr. Obi’s hope that the day would serve as a call to action — one that encourages early screening, promotes public education, combats stigma, and fosters a healthcare system that prioritises genetic counselling and affordable, dignified care.

Dignitaries present at the event included Mr. Valentine Ozigbo, who had just taken his leave, and Chief Uzuegbunam Okagbue, who represented Sir Paul Chukwuma. The representative noted Chief Okagbue’s moving tribute to Sir Paul’s compassion, particularly highlighting the donation of an ambulance to the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home — a gesture described as both timely and deeply meaningful.

Cutting the ribbon on behalf of Mr. Obi, the representative offered a moment of silent prayer, invoking blessings for all who serve others with love and humility, just as Mr. Obi would have done.

The event was marked by an emotionally charged and heartfelt speech from Ms. Aisha Edmund, founder of the Sickle Cell Orphanage and Underprivileged Home. Her tribute to the “unsung heroes” — including local bakers who donate bread weekly — struck a powerful chord. These quiet acts of kindness, she said, form the foundation of the home’s daily survival and reflect the enduring spirit of humanity within the community.

“For me,” the representative shared, “this is what true humanity looks like: service offered without spectacle, generosity given without the need for recognition, and love made visible through the everyday actions of ordinary people.”

Meanwhile, the representative proceeded to Awka to join Mr. Fidel Okafor, who stood in for Mr. Obi as Special Guest of Honour at the Anambra Times Inaugural Roundtable and Rebranding Ceremony. The event featured Prof. Godwin Onu as keynote speaker, with Senator Victor Umeh serving as Chairman of the occasion.

Further reflections from the Awka engagement are expected in the coming days.
