The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has restated its commitment to developing local capacity in shipbuilding and repairs, as the Agency docks one of its Deep Blue assets, the DB *Lagos*, at Nigerdock for routine maintenance.
Director General of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, made this known during an inspection visit to Nigerdock at the Snake Island Integrated Free Zone, Lagos, where the special mission vessel is currently undergoing servicing.
The DB *Lagos*, one of the assets under Nigeria’s Deep Blue maritime security architecture, plays a critical role in maritime domain surveillance and national security operations. It is instrumental in combating crimes such as oil theft, smuggling, piracy, and illegal immigration within Nigerian waters.
Speaking during the inspection, Dr. Mobereola expressed satisfaction with the quality and progress of the ongoing maintenance, describing it as evidence of Nigeria’s growing capacity to manage high-end ship repair and construction projects.
“What I am seeing here today is a testimony to the fact that we have the ability not only to repair but also to build here in Nigeria,” he said.
Dr. Mobereola also noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, His Excellency Adegboyega Oyetola, who has emphasized the importance of strengthening indigenous capacity in shipbuilding and maritime infrastructure.
“We at NIMASA are demonstrating our belief in this vision by maintaining our own vessels here,” the DG added.
The visit further underscores NIMASA’s commitment to promoting indigenous maritime infrastructure, enhancing national maritime security, and advancing the sustainable growth of Nigeria’s blue economy.
