The Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) have joined in mourning the passing of Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a statesman and visionary whose contributions to regional security and cooperation remain enduring.
In a condolence message issued on behalf of the two institutions, the Executive Secretary of LCBC and Head of Mission, MNJTF, Ambassador Mamman Nuhu, expressed heartfelt sympathies to the Government and people of Nigeria, as well as the family of the late President.
Ambassador Nuhu hailed former President Buhari for his unwavering commitment to the stability and development of the Lake Chad Basin region. He noted that Buhari’s pivotal role in revitalizing the MNJTF reinvigorated the collective regional effort against Boko Haram and other terrorist threats, significantly contributing to the security of the region’s people.
“His steadfast support was instrumental in the strengthening of the MNJTF and the renewed drive for peace and stability,” Nuhu said, emphasizing that Buhari’s advocacy for the recharging of Lake Chad and his consistent call for global cooperation on the issue reflected his deep concern for the livelihoods and resilience of communities in the Basin.
The LCBC and MNJTF also praised the late President for his legacy of regional integration, peacebuilding, and development — values that they described as a cornerstone for collective progress in West and Central Africa.
“In this moment of grief, we stand in solidarity with the people of Nigeria to honour the memory of a distinguished leader whose dedication to peace and unity will continue to inspire,” Ambassador Nuhu said.
He concluded the statement by praying to Almighty Allah (SWT) to forgive President Buhari’s shortcomings, accept his good deeds, and grant him eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdausi.
