The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc, MNIPS, PhD, has embarked on a comprehensive tour of police formations across the state, in a bid to reinforce security strategies and deepen community policing efforts.

On Tuesday, June 18, 2025, the CP commenced the tour with an unannounced visit to the Rapid Response Squad Unit before proceeding to the Police Mobile Force (PMF) 54 Squadron and the Area Command in Onitsha. The inspection, according to the Command, is part of a broader initiative aimed at evaluating the operational readiness of personnel, identifying challenges, and providing sustainable solutions for more efficient policing.

During his engagements with officers, CP Orutugu stressed the imperative of upholding professionalism, discipline, and adherence to the Nigeria Police Force’s operational protocols. He condemned the recent tragic incident in Awka involving the accidental shooting of a police inspector by his own son.

According to the Commissioner, the inspector’s son, unaware of the loaded state of the AK-47 rifle assigned to his father, accidentally discharged the weapon, resulting in the officer’s death. The inspector’s second son, who was also injured, is currently receiving medical treatment.

Describing the incident as heartbreaking and avoidable, CP Orutugu reiterated the importance of responsible weapon handling and called on officers to remain vigilant in both professional and domestic settings.

He also cautioned officers against misconduct such as corruption, extortion, and dereliction of family responsibilities, noting that such behaviours erode public trust and compromise job performance.

Accompanying the CP on the tour were senior officers, including the Assistant Commissioners of Police in charge of Administration and Criminal Investigation Departments.

The visit forms part of ongoing efforts by the Anambra State Police Command to enhance law enforcement efficiency and restore public confidence in security agencies across the state.
