The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a comprehensive training and orientation programme for vigilante operatives across the state, with a focus on human rights, rule of law, and standard security protocols.
In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the initiative aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, to deepen community policing, promote inter-agency collaboration, and enhance professionalism at the grassroots level.
According to the release, the training features sessions facilitated by senior police officers, personnel of sister security agencies, civil society organizations, and human rights advocates. Participants are being equipped with best practices in community safety, intelligence gathering, ethical conduct, and lawful engagement strategies.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc MNIPS PhD, emphasized that the programme is part of ongoing efforts to instill discipline and professionalism among vigilante operatives supporting internal security efforts in the state.
“Respect for the fundamental rights of citizens and strong coordination with formal law enforcement agencies are critical expectations for all vigilante groups,” CP Orutugu said.
The Command urged all community-based vigilante outfits to cooperate fully with Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and Area Commanders to ensure effective supervision and smooth coordination throughout the exercise.
Reaffirming its commitment to a secure Anambra, the Police Command stated that building community trust remains central to its mission of promoting lasting peace and development in the state.
