The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 19-year-old suspect, Chimaobi Mbonu, in connection with the kidnap and murder of one Mr. George Onwurah in May 2024 at Ndiukwuenu Village, Orumba North Local Government Area.
The arrest was made by operatives attached to the Awgbu Divisional Headquarters at about 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, June 12, 2025. According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the operation was made possible through active community support.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect is allegedly part of a notorious kidnapping gang responsible for abducting and torturing victims to death, even after ransom payments. The gang is also believed to have vandalised a Community Health Care Centre, carting away electrical fittings and other valuables.
Police operatives have reportedly put in place operational plans to apprehend the remaining gang members still at large.
The command assured that further updates on the case will be provided as investigations progress.
