The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has unveiled activities for its 2026 Press Week, with former Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dakuku Peterside, billed to deliver the keynote public lecture.
According to the statement signed by Adewale Akodu, Chairman of the Press Week Committee, and Moses Omorogieva, Secretary of the Committee, the week long programme is scheduled to run from Monday, September 28 to Sunday, October 4, 2026, bringing together journalists, media executives, journalism students, industry experts, policymakers and other stakeholders.
According to the council, the annual event is designed to promote professional excellence, strengthen unity among journalists and provide an avenue for media practitioners to interact, network and exchange ideas.
The Press Week will commence on Monday, September 28, with a Health and Awareness Walk as part of activities aimed at promoting the wellbeing of journalists.
The major intellectual engagement will hold on Wednesday, September 30, featuring a public lecture titled, “Politics, Ports and the Public Interest: The Media’s Catalytic Role in Driving Economic Growth.”
Peterside, a former NIMASA Director General, is expected to lead discussions on the intersection of politics, maritime activities, public interest and economic development, with particular attention to the role of the media.
The lecture will take place at 10am at the Radio Lagos/Eko FM Multipurpose Hall, Lagos Television (LTV) Complex, Lateef Jakande Road, Agidingbi, Ikeja, Lagos.
The event is expected to attract maritime professionals, media practitioners, policymakers, journalism students, business leaders and other stakeholders interested in the relationship between effective journalism and economic growth.
Chairman of NUJ Lagos State Council, Mr Adeleye Ajayi, described the Press Week as an important annual tradition that provides journalists from different media organisations an opportunity to interact and strengthen professional relationships.
Ajayi said journalists routinely devote their professional lives to reporting issues affecting individuals, institutions and society, making it important for practitioners to also create time to interact and build stronger bonds.
He said the council would work to ensure that the 2026 edition provides a memorable experience while promoting unity, professional development and responsible journalism among members.
The programme will continue on Thursday, October 1, with the Chapel Rendezvous at the LTV premises from 4pm, followed by a Juma’at Service on Friday, October 2, at the Lagos State Secretariat Mosque, Central Business District, Alausa, Ikeja, at 1pm.
The Press Week will also feature a Gala and Awards Night at the BOS Hall, LTV Complex, Agidingbi, Ikeja, scheduled for 4pm, providing an opportunity to recognise outstanding contributions to journalism and related fields.
The week will climax on Sunday, October 4, with a Thanksgiving Service at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Interdenominational, Central Business District, Alausa, Ikeja, beginning at 10am.
The NUJ Lagos State Council urged journalists across the state to participate actively in the activities, stressing that the Press Week offers an opportunity to celebrate the profession, strengthen professional networks and reaffirm the media’s commitment to responsible journalism and societal development.
