Nation Celebrates Enduring Legacy As Musiliu Smith Turns 80

Tributes flowed freely in Lagos on Friday as eminent Nigerians gathered to celebrate former Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith, who marked his 80th birthday at a grand ceremony attended by top security officials, political leaders and business figures.

The event, held at the prestigious Federal Palace Hotel, drew a distinguished audience united in honour of a man widely described as a symbol of discipline, integrity and enduring service to the nation.

Speakers at the ceremony, themed Accolades for a Quintessential Patriot, paid glowing tributes to Smith’s contributions to policing and governance, noting that his legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s security architecture years after leaving office.

Representing the state government, Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat praised the celebrant’s unwavering commitment to institutional development, stressing that his career reflected deep respect for the rule of law and public accountability.

Hamzat observed that beyond his tenure in office, Smith remained actively engaged in national service, contributing to policy direction through his roles in the Police Service Commission and the Lagos State Security Council.

In his remarks, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described Smith as a mentor whose influence transcends generations within the Force.

He recalled how the former police chief offered guidance early in his career, noting that such counsel played a defining role in shaping his professional journey, particularly during his time with the Lagos Rapid Response Squad.

Former governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Raji Fashola, highlighted Smith’s strategic role in strengthening the state’s security framework during a period marked by heightened violent crime.

Fashola noted that consultations with the retired IGP informed critical reforms that later culminated in the establishment of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and enhanced policing capacity.

Also speaking, Adebayo Ibrahim Yusuf, National Deputy President of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, described Smith as a principled leader whose impact extended beyond policing into education and community development.

He cited Smith’s pioneering role as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Summit University, noting his sustained commitment to the institution’s growth and infrastructure development.

Former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, said Smith’s tenure as police chief coincided with Nigeria’s transition to civil rule in 1999, adding that his calm leadership helped stabilise the Force during a delicate political era.

Amosun further commended the celebrant’s humane disposition, particularly his support for officers and their families beyond official duty.

The ceremony attracted an array of dignitaries across sectors, underscoring the breadth of Smith’s influence in national life and the deep respect he commands among peers and protégés.

Many of the speakers agreed that the milestone celebration was not merely about age, but a recognition of a lifetime defined by service, leadership and an enduring commitment to the ideals of nation-building.
