In the wake of a deadly assault on Angwan Rukuba that left 27 people dead and 19 others injured, the Inspector General of Police, Tunji Rilwan Disu, on Thursday led a high level delegation to Jos, pledging swift justice and a decisive crackdown on those behind the carnage.
The sombre visit comes amid rising tension and anxiety across Plateau State, as residents grapple with renewed fears over safety. Addressing members of the grieving community, the police chief conveyed deep sorrow and reassured citizens of the unwavering resolve of the Nigeria Police Force to restore calm.
Disu declared that the perpetrators of the heinous act would not escape justice, stressing that ongoing operations had already yielded significant breakthroughs in the manhunt for suspects linked to the attack.
Security sources confirmed that no fewer than 7 suspects have so far been apprehended, including an individual found to be impersonating a soldier, raising fresh concerns about criminal infiltration and deception within troubled areas.
In a show of empathy, the IGP visited the affected neighbourhoods, interacting with distraught residents and assessing the extent of destruction firsthand, while urging calm and cooperation with security agencies.
He also proceeded to medical facilities where victims are receiving treatment, offering words of comfort and solidarity, and assuring them that the government would not abandon them in their moment of pain.
At the Government House, Disu held a closed door meeting with Plateau State Governor, Caleb Muftwang, alongside members of the State Executive Council, where he described the attack as both tragic and unacceptable.
The police chief reiterated that every individual connected to the violence would be tracked and prosecuted, vowing that justice would be thorough and uncompromising.
Responding, Muftwang commended the swift intervention by the police hierarchy, describing the IGP’s visit as timely and reassuring in a period marked by grief and uncertainty across the state.
The governor further lauded the rapid deployment of the Deputy Inspector General in charge of Operations and praised officers on ground, particularly the Mobile Police units, while calling for increased personnel deployment as both sides reaffirmed their commitment to restoring lasting peace in Plateau State.
