IRON LADY OF ENTERPRISE: The Remarkable Journey of Chief (Dr.) Yeye Afolashade Shona Aluko

In a nation where resilience often defines success, Chief (Dr.) Yeye Afolashade Shona Aluko stands tall as a symbol of determination, enterprise and compassion. Revered in business circles as a disciplined leader and celebrated in community spaces as a philanthropist, her journey reflects the story of a woman who transformed passion for education and service into a lifelong mission of impact.

Born over five decades ago in Kaduna, northern Nigeria, Afolashade’s upbringing exposed her early to the rich cultural diversity and dynamism that would later shape her worldview. Her academic path began at Queen Elizabeth School in Ilorin, Kwara State, before she proceeded to the Federal College of Education, Kabuga in Kano, where she deepened her commitment to teaching and learning.

Determined to broaden her intellectual horizons, she later earned a degree in Education Management from Ogun State University, now Olabisi Onabanjo University. That academic foundation became the bedrock upon which she built her professional philosophy of discipline, diligence and purposeful leadership.

Her career began in the classroom as an educationist, where she quickly earned admiration for her strict but inspiring teaching style. Known for instilling strong values in her students, she became a mentor whose influence extended far beyond textbooks. Many of her former students today occupy prominent positions in different professions and remain grateful for the discipline and mentorship she provided.

Yet, Afolashade’s vision for education went beyond classroom walls. She recognized early that effective learning, particularly for young children, requires stimulating environments and engaging educational tools. This realization sparked a bold entrepreneurial journey that would eventually redefine her career path.

Driven by that vision, she founded DLA Children Playground Equipment and Toys Limited, a company that has spent more than two decades providing educational aids and safe playground equipment to schools across Nigeria. Through this enterprise, she has contributed significantly to improving early childhood learning experiences.

Her company’s partnerships with government agencies such as the Universal Basic Education Commission and various State Universal Basic Education Boards have enabled the supply of innovative educational materials that help stimulate children’s curiosity and learning interests in schools nationwide.

Beyond education-focused solutions, Afolashade expanded her entrepreneurial interests into other sectors including amusement parks and food manufacturing. These ventures have further reinforced her reputation as a dynamic and forward-thinking business leader with a strong sense of innovation and strategic foresight.

In business circles, she is affectionately known as the “Iron Lady,” a nickname that reflects her uncompromising commitment to excellence and zero tolerance for mediocrity. Those who have worked with her describe her as a leader who believes deeply in due diligence, professionalism and accountability.

Her remarkable contributions have earned her widespread recognition. Over the years, she has received numerous awards celebrating her achievements in business, education and humanitarian service. Among them is the prestigious Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria (CRAN) Sterling Award in recognition of her outstanding support for humanitarian causes.

In addition, the Lagos State Ministry of Education honoured her for her significant contributions to the development and growth of special education in the state, while other institutions and organisations have celebrated her dedication to educational advancement and community development.

Her commitment to empowering women has also been widely acknowledged. In 2023, the Association of Female Artisans Nigeria appointed her National Matron in recognition of her unwavering support for women’s development and economic empowerment.

Further recognition followed with prestigious honours including the Oodua Special Recognition Award, the Nigerian Union of Journalists Ibadan Chapel’s Philanthropist of the Year Award, and the Golden-Star Award for Empowerment and Community Development presented by Security Watch Africa.

In 2025, her contributions to society earned her a revered traditional honour when the Ooni of Ile-Ife conferred on her the chieftaincy title Yeye Bobajiro Oodua, a recognition reserved for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to community development and service.

Despite her many accomplishments, those close to her say her greatest passion lies in humanitarian work. She devotes much of her time to mentoring women and youths, counselling young people to make positive life choices and providing scholarships to deserving students who might otherwise lack opportunities.

Through her businesses, philanthropy and advocacy, Chief (Dr.) Yeye Afolashade Shona Aluko continues to inspire a generation of Nigerians who believe that true leadership lies not only in success but in service to humanity. Her story remains a powerful reminder that with vision, discipline and compassion, one individual can shape countless lives and contribute meaningfully to national development.
