Operatives of the Ilaro Division of the Ogun State Police Command have arrested a man, Adewale Ogoemi Arojah, for allegedly impersonating a popular cleric on Facebook and defrauding several victims of more than N18 million.

The suspect was accused of creating a duplicate Facebook account in the name of Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun and using the platform to offer fake prophecies, prayers and spiritual assistance to unsuspecting members of the public.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged with the police on October 3, 2026, by Akogun, who is popularly known as Prophet Dr. Muyiwa Akogun on Facebook.

The cleric reportedly alerted the police after receiving complaints from members of the public about fraudulent activities allegedly being carried out through a Facebook account bearing his identity.

Following the complaint, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ilaro Division deployed intelligence and detective operatives to investigate and track the suspected impersonator.

According to the command, sustained intelligence gathering and technological monitoring led detectives to a village in Ajegunle, along the Ilaro/Ibogun axis, where the suspect was apprehended.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to impersonating Akogun on Facebook and admitted using the cleric’s identity to offer fake prophecies and prayer services to people seeking spiritual assistance.

Preliminary investigations further indicated that the suspect allegedly targeted individuals who visited the cleric’s Facebook page in search of spiritual help, gained their confidence and demanded money from them.

The police said victims of the alleged scheme were based in Nigeria and abroad, with the total amount reportedly obtained through the fraudulent activities exceeding N18 million.

The suspect has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for further investigation, including efforts to establish the full extent of the alleged fraud and identify possible accomplices.

The Commissioner of Police, Ogun State Command, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the Ilaro operatives for their vigilance and swift response. The command urged members of the public to verify social media accounts before sending money for spiritual services and report suspected cybercrime or impersonation through the Gateway Shield toll free line 0800 000 9111, 09164859299 or 09154293464.
