The Nigerian Navy has stressed the importance of physical fitness, discipline and professionalism among its personnel, describing them as essential requirements for maintaining operational readiness in an increasingly complex security environment.
The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, stated this in his address at the Nigerian Navy 2026 Third Quarter Route March, held as part of efforts to promote physical fitness, resilience and teamwork among personnel.
The address was delivered on his behalf by the Chief Staff Officer, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Nnamdi Ekwom, who led senior naval officers and personnel during the exercise.
Abbas said the quarterly route march had become a firmly established tradition in the Nigerian Navy, stressing that it was more than a routine fitness activity as it reinforced discipline, resilience, teamwork and operational preparedness.
According to him, the changing nature of naval operations requires personnel to possess the physical endurance, mental alertness and professional competence necessary to respond effectively to emerging security threats.
He noted that naval personnel now operate beyond traditional maritime responsibilities, working alongside sister Services and other security agencies in joint operations, including counterterrorism and counterinsurgency engagements.
The CNS therefore urged officers and ratings to make physical fitness a continuous habit, noting that personnel could be required to operate for prolonged periods in demanding environments and under intense pressure, whether at sea or ashore.
Abbas also charged naval personnel to remain apolitical, nonpartisan and professional as the country approaches the 2027 general elections, stressing the Armed Forces’ responsibility to preserve national stability and support the democratic process within the law and authorised directives.
He urged personnel to avoid statements, associations and activities capable of undermining the professional image of the Nigerian Navy, while encouraging them to uphold institutional standards and remain prepared to respond whenever duty calls.
