The Lagos State Police Command has launched a campaign against political and digital thuggery as part of efforts to deepen engagement with young people and strengthen community security across the state.
The campaign was unveiled on Thursday, August 27, 2026, during the Lagos State Police Youth Dialogue held to commemorate International Youth Day 2026 at the Police Officers Wives Association Secretariat, Oduduwa Street, Lagos.
The programme, held under the theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” was organised in line with the initiative and directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu.
The Command said the initiative was designed to improve Police Youth relations, promote responsible citizenship and sensitise young people to the dangers of political thuggery, digital thuggery and other forms of criminality.
The event attracted representatives of sister security agencies, youth organisations, transport unions, community groups, student bodies, the media and youths from Police barracks across Lagos State.
Among the security agencies represented were the 9 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, 651 Base Service Group of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy BEECROFT, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Other participating organisations included the Police Officers Wives Association, National Youth Service Corps, Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices, Police Community Relations Committee and National Youth Council of Nigeria.
The National Association of Nigerian Students, National Union of Road Transport Workers, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria and National Association of Online Security News Publishers were also represented.
A major feature of the programme was an interactive Police Youth Dialogue, which provided participants with an opportunity to discuss issues surrounding youth development, policing, security, political participation, social media, cultism, thuggery and emerging security threats.
The Command noted that although young Nigerians operate within different social, economic and cultural environments, they share common aspirations for a peaceful, secure and prosperous society.
Participants were consequently urged to deploy their energy, creativity and influence towards positive development while rejecting violence, intimidation, misinformation and the misuse of digital platforms for criminal activities.
The Command also stressed the need for young people to recognise the consequences of allowing themselves to be recruited into political violence, cultism, cyber enabled crimes and other activities capable of undermining peace and public safety.
In recognition of his contribution to Police Youth relations and community security, the Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lagos State, Engr. Adigun Ibrahim Olalekan, was honoured with an award as Police Youth Ambassador.
The heads of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria, National Association of Online Security News Publishers and the youth wing of the Police Community Relations Committee were also recognised for their contributions to security, youth engagement, community policing and efforts to build a safer Lagos.
The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, commended the participating organisations, youth leaders, security agencies and other stakeholders for their support.
He urged youth leaders, transport unions, student bodies, community organisations and the media to take ownership of the campaign and continuously sensitise their members against political thuggery, cultism, cyber enabled criminality and violence.
He further called on residents, particularly young people, to provide the Police and other security agencies with credible and timely information that could assist crime prevention and promote lasting peace across Lagos State.
