Troops of the 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, under the 2 Division, have rescued 14 kidnap victims during a coordinated operation under Operation WABAIZIGAN in Edo State, reinforcing ongoing efforts to tackle kidnapping and violent crime across the state.
The successful rescue followed a swift military response to a kidnapping incident along the Lagos Benin Expressway in Ovia North East Local Government Area. The operation highlighted the Army’s rapid response capability and sustained commitment to protecting lives and securing major transport corridors.
Military sources disclosed that the operation commenced at about 9:30 p.m. on July 30, 2026, after troops on routine patrol received credible intelligence that armed kidnappers had attacked commuters along the highway.
Acting immediately on the intelligence, the troops launched a pursuit of the fleeing criminals, maintaining pressure along their escape route. The sustained offensive forced the kidnappers to abandon 11 of their captives before fleeing into the surrounding forest.
Determined to ensure no victim was left behind, the troops returned to the forest the following day for an intensive clearance operation. The search led to the rescue of the remaining three victims, bringing the total number of rescued persons to 14.
The victims underwent preliminary medical checks and debriefing after the operation. Military authorities confirmed that all were found to be in stable condition before being reunited with their families or allowed to continue their journeys.
Security forces have, however, intensified efforts to track down the fleeing kidnappers, with ongoing operations aimed at dismantling criminal hideouts and preventing further attacks within the Brigade’s area of responsibility.
The Army said the latest success reflects its intelligence driven operational strategy and close collaboration with other security agencies in confronting kidnapping and other violent crimes across Edo State.
It also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, noting that public cooperation remains critical to sustaining operational gains and improving security across the state.
Commander of the 4 Brigade, Brigadier General Ahmed Balogun, commended the troops for their courage, professionalism, resilience and prompt response, describing the operation as another demonstration of the Army’s determination to protect citizens.
He reassured residents of Edo State and travellers using the Lagos Benin Expressway that the Brigade would sustain aggressive operations to deny criminal elements safe havens, safeguard lives and property, and maintain a secure environment for lawful economic and social activities.
