The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) have recorded another major breakthrough in the fight against smuggling after a joint operation intercepted four boats conveying 518 bags of suspected smuggled parboiled rice along the Badagry waterways.
The seizure, announced on Monday at the Western Marine Command in Apapa, Lagos, underscored the growing synergy between the Nigerian Navy and the Nigeria Customs Service in tackling transnational smuggling and safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime borders.
Commander of NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams Aliu, disclosed that the successful operation followed credible intelligence generated through the Western Regional Control Centre’s FALCON EYE maritime surveillance system and similar intelligence gathered by the Nigeria Customs Service.
According to him, the Headquarters Western Naval Command subsequently directed the deployment of a patrol team working alongside the Federal Operations Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service, while personnel of the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Service were airlifted by a Nigerian Navy helicopter to reinforce Customs officers at a strategic checkpoint along the Badagry waterways.
The coordinated operation culminated in the interception of four boats loaded with 518 bags of suspected smuggled parboiled rice, dealing another setback to smuggling syndicates operating within Nigeria’s coastal and inland waterways.
Commodore Adams Aliu described the operation as a clear demonstration of the effectiveness of intelligence driven inter agency collaboration, stressing that the Nigerian Navy remains committed to denying criminal elements the freedom to exploit Nigeria’s maritime environment for illicit activities.
He said the success further validates the Nigerian Navy’s increasing investment in advanced maritime surveillance technology, noting that the FALCON EYE system continues to provide real time intelligence that enhances operational effectiveness across the Western Naval Command’s area of responsibility.
The naval commander explained that the operation aligns with the strategic vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, to build a highly professional and technology driven Navy capable of protecting Nigeria’s maritime interests while supporting joint security operations nationwide.
He also credited the leadership of the Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, for sustaining intelligence based operations, strengthening inter agency cooperation and deploying surveillance assets to disrupt criminal activities along Nigeria’s waterways.
Receiving the seized items, the Customs Area Controller of the Western Marine Command, Comptroller Patrick Ntadi, commended the Nigerian Navy for its unwavering operational support, describing the collaboration as a game changer in the fight against maritime smuggling.
Ntadi acknowledged that effecting arrests on water has traditionally posed enormous challenges because suspects often abandon their boats and escape by diving into the waterways. However, he said the strengthened partnership with the Nigerian Navy has significantly narrowed the operational space available to smugglers.
He recalled that recent seizures made by the command had already demonstrated increasing pressure on smuggling networks, adding that the latest operation would further discourage criminal elements attempting to use Nigeria’s waterways as illegal trade routes.
Speaking further, Commodore Adams Aliu revealed that intelligence on the smuggling activities had been independently obtained by both the Nigerian Navy and the Nigeria Customs Service before the coordinated operation was launched, describing the outcome as a textbook example of successful inter agency cooperation.
He assured Nigerians that continuous surveillance by the FALCON EYE system, sustained patrols by naval assets and strengthened Customs operations would ensure that the waterways linking Nigeria with neighbouring countries, particularly the Benin Republic corridor, become increasingly hostile to smugglers.
The commander reaffirmed that NNS BEECROFT will continue to intensify intelligence driven operations in collaboration with relevant security and law enforcement agencies in line with the Chief of the Naval Staff’s mission of deploying a highly motivated and professional naval force to protect Nigeria’s maritime domain, strengthen national security and promote economic stability.
