Nigerian visual artist and creative director Henry Ogochukwu Opene has announced his debut solo exhibition, BECOMING, a deeply personal body of work that examines identity, grief, emotional healing and self-transformation. The exhibition is scheduled to open in Lagos on June 20 and 21, 2026.
Presented under his creative platform, The Ghor Brand, the exhibition brings together a collection of mixed media paintings that explore the complex journey of self-discovery and the emotional realities that shape human experiences.
According to Opene, BECOMING reflects on the often unseen influences of memory, survival, expectation and personal growth, offering viewers an opportunity to engage with themes that resonate across cultures and generations.
The exhibition captures recurring emotional states through fragmented figurative forms, highlighting experiences of restraint, awakening, forgiveness and the search for self-definition.
Renowned for his distinctive visual language, Opene employs heavy impasto acrylic techniques, layered textures, stitched materials and symbolic imagery to create artworks rich in emotional depth and physical presence.
His artistic journey is rooted in his upbringing in Asaba and Agbor, Delta State, where creativity coexisted with structure and societal expectations, experiences that continue to inform his work.
Before returning fully to fine art, Opene built a successful career in visual communication and design, collaborating with major brands including Sterling Bank, Nigerian Breweries and Canon through leading creative agencies such as Anakle and Verdant Zeal.
He later established Ghor Designs, an independent visual communication studio under The Ghor Brand, where he led creative projects for organisations and businesses including the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Myfood by Hilda, Vixx Interiors and Trap Door Enugu.
In 2023, Opene stepped away from full-time commercial design practice to focus entirely on painting, a transition he describes as a return to his deepest artistic calling. He noted that the exhibition explores the gradual process of shedding identities shaped by fear, performance and external expectations.
At the heart of the exhibition are approximately 15 works, ranging from large-scale figurative paintings to intimate mixed media studies. The exhibition will hold at Anakle, The Ford Center, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, with an opening reception scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026. Through BECOMING, Opene invites audiences into a reflective conversation about growth, resilience and the courage required to embrace one’s authentic self.
The Ghor Brand is a multidisciplinary contemporary African art and design practice founded by Henry Ogochukwu Opene, dedicated to exploring storytelling, identity and cultural expression through visual art and design.
