Speeding Chaos Rocks Lagos As Six Injured In Ojota, Badagry Crashes

The Lagos Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has raised fresh concerns over the rising rate of reckless driving and excessive speeding on major roads across the state following two separate crashes that left six persons injured on Sunday.

The incidents, which occurred within minutes of each other in Ojota and Badagry, again brought to the fore the growing dangers posed by unsafe driving culture and disregard for traffic regulations by motorists and commercial operators.

In a statement issued by the Sector Public Education Officer, SRC Elizabeth Oluwadamilola Jayeola, the command disclosed that the first crash occurred at about 5:00 p.m. opposite the FRSC Ojota Unit Command.

The accident involved a commercial Volkswagen bus and a Mack truck, with a total of 10 persons comprising eight males and two females involved in the collision.

According to the FRSC, three male occupants sustained varying degrees of injuries during the impact, while other passengers escaped with minor or no injuries.

Preliminary investigations by the corps identified excessive speeding as the likely cause of the crash, warning that dangerous driving habits continue to account for avoidable tragedies on Nigerian highways.

FRSC rescue teams were said to have responded immediately after receiving the distress alert and swiftly evacuated the injured victims to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre for urgent medical treatment.

Officials also cleared the affected vehicles from the road shortly after the rescue operation to ease traffic congestion and restore free vehicular movement along the busy corridor.

Barely 20 minutes later, another serious accident was recorded at Iyana Ajara axis of Badagry involving a Bajaj motorcycle conveying three male passengers.

The FRSC confirmed that all three occupants of the motorcycle sustained injuries in the crash, further stretching emergency response efforts within the sector.

Rescue personnel reportedly arrived at the scene within one minute and conveyed the injured victims to the General Hospital, Badagry, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Reacting to the incidents, the Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde G. Hamzat, described both crashes as avoidable, insisting that strict adherence to traffic rules could have prevented the unfortunate situations.

Hamzat warned motorists against speeding, reckless overtaking and other hazardous driving practices capable of endangering lives and destroying property.

He particularly appealed to commercial drivers, truck operators, motorcyclists and other road users to exercise greater caution, especially on highways and densely populated traffic corridors across Lagos.

The sector commander reaffirmed the commitment of the FRSC to sustained public enlightenment, rapid rescue operations and improved traffic management aimed at reducing road crashes and safeguarding lives on Nigerian roads.
