The Forward Operating Base FORMOSO of the Nigerian Navy has intensified efforts to tackle recurring boat accidents in Bayelsa State with the distribution of free life jackets to riverine communities in Brass Local Government Area.
The initiative formed part of activities marking the 70th anniversary celebration of the Nigerian Navy and underscored the service’s growing commitment to waterways safety and community engagement.
Speaking during the exercise on Sunday, the Commanding Officer of FOB FORMOSO, Capt. SK Haruna, said water transportation remained the lifeline of many coastal communities and must be backed with strict safety measures.
He stressed that the increasing rate of boat mishaps across riverine areas had become a major concern requiring urgent intervention from both security agencies and community stakeholders.
According to him, the free distribution of life jackets was designed to promote safer boating culture among residents and reduce avoidable deaths on inland waterways.
Haruna noted that many of the recent tragedies recorded in Brass and neighbouring communities could have been prevented if passengers and boat operators had complied with basic safety procedures.
The naval chief explained that the intervention was also intended to deepen public awareness on the importance of using protective equipment during water transportation.
He urged boat operators, passengers and community leaders to make life jackets compulsory for every journey on the waterways, irrespective of distance or weather conditions.
Haruna maintained that the Nigerian Navy would continue to support initiatives aimed at safeguarding lives, protecting coastal communities and strengthening security across the maritime environment.
He added that the Navy remained committed to building stronger relationships with host communities through people centred programmes capable of improving public safety and confidence.
The event attracted key stakeholders including the Divisional Police Officer of Brass, CSP Okifo Peter, Chairman of TWON Brass Council of Elders, Chief Emmanuel Jacob, and the Station Security Officer of OANDO Brass Terminal, Mr. Yusuf Ahmed.
Community representatives at the gathering commended the Nigerian Navy for the intervention, describing the initiative as timely amid growing concerns over repeated boat accidents and safety challenges along Bayelsa waterways.
