The Director General of the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION), Rear Admiral Thaddeus Udofia (rtd) PhD, has described the 70th Anniversary of the Nigerian Navy as a historic milestone that reflects decades of sacrifice, professionalism and unwavering commitment to the protection of Nigeria’s maritime domain and projection of sea power beyond the African Continent.
Udofia stated that the Anniversary Celebration goes beyond ceremonial activities, noting that it offers Nigerians the opportunity to reflect on the strategic contributions of the Navy to national security, economic stability and regional peace across the Gulf of Guinea.
He observed that over the last 7 decades, the Nigerian Navy has evolved from a modest coastal force in 1956 to the foremost navy in Africa. Our Navy has become a formidable maritime institution with expanding operational capabilities, modern platforms and highly trained personnel capable of responding to emerging security threats.
According to him, the Navy’s sustained operations against crude oil theft, piracy, sea robbery and other maritime crimes have significantly improved safety within Nigeria’s territorial waters and enhanced investor confidence in the maritime sector. This is aside the flag showing visits to numerous countries and diplomatic relations undertaken over the years that has reinforced Nigeria’s ascendancy into an emerging maritime power on the global stage.
The Director General IMION further commended the leadership of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, for deepening maritime security architecture with development of tailored force capabilities to address new threat dimensions and promoting inter agency collaboration aimed at safeguarding the nation’s blue economy aspirations.
Udofia noted that the Nigerian Navy has remained a critical pillar in protecting vital national assets, especially offshore oil facilities, shipping corridors and port infrastructure that contribute immensely to the country’s economic survival.
He stressed that the Navy’s contributions to regional maritime cooperation have also strengthened Nigeria’s strategic influence within West and Central Africa, particularly through joint patrols, multinational exercises and coordinated anti piracy operations as well as the recent launch of the Joint Maritime Task Force.
The maritime expert added that the Navy’s investment in indigenous shipbuilding, technology acquisition and local capacity development demonstrates a forward looking vision that aligns with global maritime realities and national economic priorities.
He said the growing commitment to maritime research, training and human capital development continues to position the Navy as one of the most respected military organisations on the African continent.
Udofia also praised officers and ratings of the Service for their resilience, courage and dedication to duty, especially those deployed in difficult operational environments to secure the Nation’s maritime boundaries.
He noted that the International Maritime Institute of Nigeria shares a long standing relationship with maritime stakeholders and security agencies in promoting professional development, policy dialogue and sustainable maritime governance.
According to him, the Nigerian Navy’s role in supporting maritime education, youth engagement and strategic awareness has contributed significantly to strengthening public confidence in maritime security administration.
Udofia further urged increased investment in naval infrastructure, surveillance technology, energy-efficient shipping, marine environment sustainability and personnel welfare to enable the Navy sustain its operational momentum amid evolving global maritime security challenges.
He maintained that stronger collaboration between the Navy and maritime institutions including private sector operators would accelerate Nigeria’s quest to fully harness the enormous opportunities within the blue economy.
While congratulating the Nigerian Navy on its 70th Anniversary, Udofia expressed optimism that the Service would continue to uphold its tradition of excellence, patriotism and national service while advancing maritime security and economic prosperity for future generations.
