The Lagos State Police Command has rolled out an ambitious programme for the 2026 Police Week, in a renewed push to rebuild public confidence and project operational readiness across the state.
Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, who unveiled the weeklong activities in Lagos on Friday, said the initiative is designed to deepen community engagement while reinforcing the force’s capacity to secure lives and property.
He noted that the event, scheduled to commence on Monday, reflects a deliberate strategy to reconnect the police with citizens and reposition policing as a shared responsibility between officers and the public.
Tijani explained that although Police Week had been introduced in previous years, disruptions stalled its momentum, adding that its revival now aligns with global best practices anchored on community policing.
Anchored on the theme of trust and partnership, the commissioner stressed that sustainable crime prevention can only be achieved where mutual confidence exists between the police and the communities they serve.
According to him, modern policing has moved away from fear-driven enforcement to a people-centred approach that prioritises respect for human rights and professional conduct.
He emphasised that officers have been placed on strict directives to treat all citizens with dignity, insisting that even suspects are entitled to fundamental rights under the law.
The week’s activities will begin with environmental sanitation exercises and a medical outreach programme offering free healthcare services to residents, as part of efforts to strengthen public goodwill.
Other highlights include a road walk by officers to showcase fitness and readiness, as well as public sensitisation campaigns addressing electoral violence, cultism and road safety in strategic locations such as motor parks.
Tijani underscored the importance of public intelligence in crime fighting, while also announcing plans to honour fallen officers with welfare support for their families, adding that the event will climax with a nationwide grand finale in Abuja on April 7.
