…Fake officers unmasked in Lagos crime sweep

The Lagos State Police Command has smashed a notorious criminal syndicate accused of targeting high end vehicles across the metropolis, arresting its alleged kingpin after weeks of surveillance.

The suspect, identified as Jude Onouha, 46, was apprehended by detectives following sustained intelligence operations that placed the gang on the Command’s wanted list.

Police said the group operated with unusual deception, disguising as security operatives to gain access into residential estates under false pretences.

Investigations revealed that members wore fake security uniforms and carried a modified Mercedes Benz car jack crafted to resemble a firearm to intimidate unsuspecting residents.

Under this cover, the syndicate reportedly infiltrated estates, claiming to be on official investigation duties before launching coordinated acts of vandalism.

Their targets included luxury and utility vehicles such as Toyota Hilux, Highlander, Lexus models and Mercedes Benz, from which they removed critical and expensive components.

Among items stolen were brain boxes, control modules, wiring systems, side mirrors and other specialised parts often difficult to replace.

Police sources confirmed that the arrested suspect has made useful statements, assisting detectives in tracking down other members of the gang still at large.

Recovered exhibits include the improvised tool used as a weapon and a face cap bearing the inscription Special Force, believed to have aided their disguise.

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos, Olohundare Jimoh, urged estate managers and residents to exercise extreme caution when granting access to individuals claiming to be security personnel.

He advised that all such claims should be verified through the appropriate Divisional Police Officer before entry is allowed into any estate.

The Command also called for prompt reporting of suspicious movements, assuring that emergency lines remain active for rapid response.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to dismantle the entire network as part of a broader crackdown on organised property crimes in the state.
